How we reduced the stigma of medical devices through user focused design....

Genus Pharmaceuticals provide an apomorphine drug administration solution for patients suffering from Parkinson's disease. The drug is administered through continuous infusion via a pump and syringe system. Genus asked us to develop a protective case for their existing system that would reduce pump returns due to accidental damage.

However, not only did we deliver a case that protected the pump from both water ingress and impact, we also created a design that improved ease of use and appearance, reducing the inherent stigma associated with devices of this kind.

Don't make a sound!...

Our client Cirrus have been manufacturing noise measurement instruments for over 40 years but decided they wanted to use our expertise in designing their Optimus sound level meter. Cirrus produce the internal technology themselves but had previously been using an off the shelf aluminium case which was not only expensive but far from aesthetically pleasing! 

They asked us to design an ergonomic case that would complement the easy to use technology but still be robust enough to withstand a range of different environments, including being water resistant.

We faced many challenges throughout the design process, as not only did the product need to be shaped correctly to bounce sound away from the microphone but we also had to ensure that the buttons did not make a sound when pressed as this would distort the reading.

As a result of our work, the Optimus is now their best selling meter and was also successfully showcased at the Safety and Health Expo 2011 where it was awarded a Highly Commended within the Innovation Category.
