Sterling Expans Popular WorkPro Static Rope Series

Biddeford, ME
Sterling Rope Company, Inc. developed an entirely new approach to rope construction using mixed materials. With a polyester sheath and nylon core, the WorkPro offers a balanced elongation in the core and sheath so they share the load evenly. This makes the WorkPro series stronger than other ropes of similar diameters while retaining a small but important amount of elongation.

These kernmantle ropes are dual certified to EN 1891 Type A and NFPA 1983 (Technical for 3/8” and 7/16”, General for ½”). They also meet ANSI Z133 Standards.

“I’ve used the 7/16” WorkPro extensively this past year and I’m happy to see Sterling is coming out with a ½” diameter that has the same performance and handling characteristics” says Ed Carpenter, Owner and Lead Instructor for North American Training Solutions. “As an arborist, the larger diameter is easier on my hands when I climb and is more compatible with the gear I use.”

The WorkPro series of static ropes are available in 3/8”, 7/16” and ½” diameters. Each model comes in multiple colors and lengths. For more information or to purchase, please visit your local authorized Sterling Retailer or go to SterlingRope.com

MAMe's Workforce Activities

Student and Educator Outreach

Early and Pre-Release Populations

At our annual summits, the issue of workforce availability continues to plague the manufacturing sector. With low unemployment and a lack of understanding of what careers are available in manufacturing, MAMe is working on outreach strategies to assess various populations of potential workers. As you know, MAMe has two outstanding student programs (Dream It. Do It. Maine and the Robotics institute of Maine) to educate and encourage more young people to look at careers in manufacturing, technology and engineering. The success of these programs is showing an increase of 40% over the past few years in DIDI student outreach and 82% of all students in RIM that graduate are going on to higher education in STEM careers.

In late summer, MAMe met with the Department of Corrections to discuss programs and services focused on populations that are in early or pre-release programs and how we can create a strategy for prisoners seeking employment. MAMe staff toured the Maine Correctional facility in Windham. The Department of Corrections has several “well kept secrets” of support programs and services to assist prisoners with employment and education activities. We are doing outreach to members to ask if you are able and interested in looking at early and pre-release populations, both male and female, for job opportunities in you company. As well, MAMe has signed on to participate in the “Hire A Vet” program being led by the Maine Department of Labor. We have included a piece in the newsletter and a link to follow-up on more information. As always, we are working on your behalf on issues that are most relevant to you and your company.

Pop Quiz from August 2017 Manufacturing Matters Newsletter:

What is the first thing you do when Bernie Madoff applies to your Controller opening?

Answer:  This one is a gimmie, do a thorough background check on applicants.

As we discussed earlier, a vast majority of asset misappropriation is committed by first time criminals, but contacting previous employers and all of the professional references may reveal ‘interesting’ comments such as “I wonder why this person gave me as a work reference since we only know each other from our kids sports team” or “our records do not show anyone by that name as having worked here before”.  Due to potential litigation issues, the trend is for employers to only provide the date of hire and date of separation for an employee.  One question that still seems to be answered more often than not – “Is this person eligible for re-hire?”

Flashback from the June 2017 Issue: A formal Risk Assessment assists in Assessing Risk (Identify and address organizational vulnerabilities to their internal controls), Preventing Loss, Protecting Assets, and Recovering Assets for every organization.  The results are used to assist organizations in identifying internal and external business risks and developing a risk response plan.

Pop Quiz #5:  If the Risk Assessment results in at least one area with a substantial risk to the organization, what options are usually found in a risk response plan?

Answer:  Hint: Traditionally, there are 4 responses.  Please join us again in the October issue…
