Pop Quiz #6:  If you want to mitigate the risk of loss, implement prevention and detection controls as countermeasures to the risk.  What is the best course of action?

Answer:  The most common approach is to have a rotation of duties for reconciling the bank/credit union accounts, deposits, and other accounting duties.

Highest risk scenario - having the same person open the mail, process the payments by either signing themselves or with an electronic signature of senior management, filling out the deposit slip, travelling to the bank/credit union and making the deposit, reconciling the deposit slips with the monthly statements, and updating the accounting systems. Throw in check writing authority for accounts payable plus payroll processing/check distribution and you have quite the challenge for a loss to be discovered by an organization. Cross training is essential and the rotation of duties should be on a regular basis (bi-weekly, monthly, etc.) and not only when staff are on vacation or out sick.

Rotating financial-related duties among staff sounds pretty easy, but is not without challenges for smaller organizations that might not have a budget for multiple employees with a sufficient accounting background.

Pop Quiz #7:   Are organizations that don’t implement a rotation of duties doomed?

Answer:  See the Thanksgiving edition of the Manufacturing Matters Newsletter.

Steve Tenney, UBS Wealth Management

"A growing number of successful people have a strong urge to “pay it forward” by financially supporting causes and organizations that are near and dear to their hearts.

Many of you already make regular and sizable charitable contributions. And we know from research that one key reason successful people like you want to become even wealthier is to help other people increase their own success and advance in the world.

But have you gotten your family involved in philanthropy? If not, you could be missing a truly massive opportunity to teach your children and other loved ones about smart financial decision making and impart key financial values that can guide them throughout their lives."

Maine Technology Institute’s
Maine Technical Assets Fund 2.0

In June 2017, voters in Maine approved a bond to fund Maine businesses. Currently, $45M is available in Challenge Funds to Maine companies for infrastructure, equipment and technology upgrades for research development and commercialization.

Timing: Rolling application, accepted anytime between now and Dec. 31st 2017

The intent of the funds is for capital equipment or infrastructure projects that will lead to holding and gaining market share, increased revenues, expanded employment, and retention of jobs.

On October 2, MTI held a training session here at MAMe for our BGS network consultants to learn about the program and help companies with questions, application requirements and to provide technical assistance to companies once the company is approved for funding.

Did you know the 3 major goals of the Manufacturers of Maine Group Trust are to help support a strong loss prevention program, reduce worker’s compensation rates and return surplus funds to the Members?

The Manufacturers Association of Maine and the Manufacturers of Maine Workers’ Compensation Group Trust formed a partnership in 2007 to operate in cooperation with each other to the mutual benefit of their members and the general manufacturing community in Maine.

The Manufacturers of Maine Group Trust was formed in 1993. Its membership includes 21 Maine based manufacturers. The group trust provides workers’ compensation coverage to its members.
Since 1993, the Group Trust has returned just over $9 million dollars of surplus insurance premiums to its members.
