EDC Working Hard for Rutherford County

The Economic Development Staff continues efforts to promote Rutherford County even in these slow economic times.  Contacts and relationships developed today pay dividends well into the future.  Following is a brief synopsis of recent networking and educational opportunities:

Industrial Asset Management Council (May, 2010)  Tom Johnson, Executive Director for Rutherford County EDC, was able to meet face-to-face with multiple real estate heads and executives of various corporations from throughout the country during this semi-annual event.  These are the people who are involved in the final location decision for new and expanded corporate real estate projects. In addition to roundtable discussions workshops Tom was able to spend time with the Deputy Secretary of Commerce for North Carolina and was able to share information about Rutherford County efforts and highlight available real estate options.

AdvantageWest Site Selectors weekend (May, 2010)  Mary Taylor, Kerry Giles and Tom Johnson spent several days with eight site location professionals and local allies.  A comprehensive presentation was given illustrating outstanding industrial assets available to recruit new industry to Rutherford County.  Tremendous feedback from these experts has allowed us to refine details and information on our website and collateral marketing materials.

AdvantageWest Economic Developers Advisory Committee  (June, 2010)  Tom Johnson and Mary Taylor attended this annual trip from our Western Regional Partnership to Raleigh.  Two days of intensive learning sessions allow us to receive detailed program updates from various agencies including the NC Department of Commerce, the NC Rural Center, Golden Leaf Foundation and the Appalachian Regional Commission.  Other economic development allies share knowledge about their efforts on behalf of economic development.  The chance to have an early-morning breakfast discussion with several members of the western NC elected delegation of the General Assembly is a highlight of the trip.

These opportunities for open dialogue and networking provide an unparalleled chance to both showcase Rutherford County and to learn peer-to-peer about how to deal with today’s challenging economic development world.  The ability to stay connected and up-to-date on various programs and activities, as well as in touch with the various economic development allies is critical.  Information gained at these events enable the Rutherford County  EDC staff to assist both companies looking for a new location as well as work with expansions of existing companies in the application of various programs.  If you have any expansion plans, please talk with the EDC staff early in the process so the maximum benefits can be obtained.

Fiber Comes to the Forest City Industrial Park

For the past three years, many people have been working to bring fiber to the Forest City Industrial Park off Withrow Road.  Thanks to the Town of Forest City, fiber is now being deployed.  The Town has allocated funds from their NC Step Grant through the NC Rural Center to make this project happen.

Several years ago, Rutherford County was able to get their fiber network onto Withrow Road, and now with the help of the Town of Forest City, it can be brought directly into the park and to our existing businesses.  Initial companies this service will help include KCH Services, Heritage Classic Wovens and River Textiles.  Service will be provide through Pangaea Fiber Network (www.pangaea.us).

The Economic Development Office is here to serve you as best we can.  Please let us know if we can assist you in your own expansion possibilities, customer relocations, workforce data, etc.
