How to Buy Solar in Tennessee
Harvey Abouelata

Before buying a Solar System in Tennessee you should consider your budget, site, grants, brands and installers. If you are considering a solar system for your home in Tennessee you have the Federal Tax Credit and the TVA Generation Power Program (TVAGPP) available to offset some of the costs. A solar system for your business in Tennessee has several programs available to help with the cost: Federal grant, Solar Institute grant, possibly the USDA REAP grant, and the TVAGPP.

Utility Scale Solar Energy System Installations
Robbie Thomas / Harvey Abouelata

Efficient Energy of Tennessee President Robbie Thomas announces a utility scale product targeted at municipalities. Specifically, the system is just under One megawatt following the TVA Generation Power Programs guidelines. The MW system is especially attractive to municipalities; however it is available for any business in the TVA region.  The MW system requires ZERO upfront cost and offers the municipality a number of options on how it chooses to benefit from the partnership.

Efficient Energy of Tennessee’s Solar Energy Megawatt Partnership is designed to give the client the maximum amount of long term flexibility and protection against utility cost inflation and carbon reduction. The details of the installation and partnership are confidential and we would be pleased to have the opportunity to meet with any organization to share this information. The organization must own the property designated for the installation, the organization must have the ability to enter a twenty year agreement, the site’s sole purpose must not be for the purpose of generating power and the property must be approximately five acres. The terms of the agreement are flexible to some extent based on the desires and needs of the organization. Most proposals will consist of a twenty-year property lease with an option for the customer to purchase the system after a pre-determined period.

To meet and discuss the details of this offer please contact:

EETN Mary Shaffer Speight speaks at the Knoxville Solar City Workshop on the USDA energy grant (REAP)

The Knoxville Chamber and the Solar Knoxville program invited business owners, facility managers, financial officers, and other interested representatives to "Solar 101" for Businesses, a workshop designed to help Knoxville companies learn about why and how solar energy can be great for business.

The workshop provided an overview of the different types of solar technologies appropriate for business applications, a look at the financial incentives that make solar affordable in TN, and offered testimonies from some local businesses that have already "gone solar." Efficient Energy of Tennessee’s Mary Shaffer Speight represented USDA Rural Development to provide information on the department’s grant available for small businesses investing in renewable energy systems.

Other speakers included Gil Mealer-Hough, Knoxville Solar America Cities Coordinator, Steve Noe of Knoxville Utilities Board, Stacey Patterson, Director of Research Partnerships at the University of Tennessee and Ted Wampler, Jr. of Wampler’s Farm Sausage Company.

These speakers discussed the different energy incentives available to businesses and Ted Wampler, Jr. was able to show how he took advantage of the programs they represented.

Solar System Property Tax Exemption
Currently there are no state policies for solar energy systems’ property tax. Consider not only allowing solar systems to be property tax exempt, but in addition to offer a tax credit for purchasing solar panels produced within our state. [READ MORE]
